Wearables such as fitbit are increasingly providing interesting forensic evidence in crimes. December 23, 2015, saw what appeared initially to be a home invasion and murder case associated with a married couple in Connecticut. Connie Dabate was found dead with a gunshot wound; her husband, Richard Dabate, was found by police partially bound.

In the absence of any corroborating evidence that someone else entered the home, the police turned to Richard. His claims about the specific timing of events were refuted by investigators' examination of his wife's fitbit; it showed she was active and walking (recording steps) an hour after he claimed his wife was murdered.
