7 Displaying Images

Image display has long been a specialty of IDL. Few other data analysis environments offer the flexibility of IDL when it comes to reading, manipulating, and displaying digital images. This chapter begins with a definition of the two image types that can be displayed in IDL: PseudoColor and TrueColor. The built-in procedures available for displaying images are described, followed by a discussion of image scaling techniques, including histogram clipping and equalization. The chapter continues with a description of how images may be resized and positioned to fit the display.
