The use of images is almost mandatory for writing a clear GDD, but what really works is associating the images with meaningful captions. Maybe the concept you are showing is described in detail in a paragraph, but always reinforce what you are showing with an image. Even better, whenever possible try to describe the image with the caption only, or associate with an image a short bullet point list, with no other text whatsoever.
