Three-act story

The concept behind the three-act story is very simple: each story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. This concept is extremely intuitive, as most of the stories we know follow it. Just think about the classic fairy tales that start with Once upon a time and end with and they lived happily ever after, after a series of events. Movies, books, and many games follow the same pattern.

A better definition of beginning, middle, and end are given by looking at what happens in each of these parts, or acts:

  • Introduction (beginning): This is where the story is set up. The characters are described and the setting is presented. Everything in this section answers questions such as who and why. Who are the protagonists of the story ...
