Types of Villains

There are two kinds of villain a player can face:

  • Story Villains: A story villain is the kind of antagonist we usually find in books or movies. His function is to drive the story forward, to give the protagonist the motivation to keep going and stop him, to create a dramatic conflict both physical and psychological. Some examples of memorable story villains are The Origami Killer from Heavy Rain, Big Boss from Metal Gear, and Jon Irenicus in Baldur's Gate 2.
  • Boss Villains: A boss villain is more focused on the gameplay challenge it poses to the player. It is the boss in Dark Soul, Bowser in Super Mario or Diablo in...well Diablo. They exist to challenge the player to use and master the game mechanics in order to beat them. ...
