7 LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS
In this chapter I will look at why it is imperative that you start your data migration journey by understanding the legacy environment. I introduce the legacy data store concept and explain how to find, document and manage the large number of legacy data stores you are likely to encounter on even the most modest of data migrations. I will look at gap analysis as it relates to legacy data stores and how to steal a march on the project by performing the majority of your gap analysis before the target is defined. I will introduce you to master data management as it applies to data migration. Finally, I look at the use of software tools to perform data profiling and how this activity is integrated into PDMv2.
