INTRODUCTION

We have seen from Golden Rule 1 that a data migration exercise, to be successful, must be enterprise-led, which is an easy thing to say, but is often difficult to put into practice. We technologists would much prefer to keep our heads down and get on with the closely defined task of moving bits and bytes around rather than the messy and possibly confrontational business of gaining ownership. But you have to tackle this task early in your project, when motivation and enthusiasm are high, or risk trying to find ownership later when major issues need to be resolved.
