There is a great deal of interest in deploying virtual private networks within service provider networks to provide virtual circuits to a large-scale enterprise network. Conceptually, using virtual private networks (VPNs) to interconnect geographically separated networks can save money, since the service provider's network is shared among many customers, and at the same time allow the service provider to take on some of the routing and network design complexity rather than forcing the enterprise customer to work on these things.
