Security has become, in recent years, a very large concern within networks; it's increasingly difficult to consider any change to a protocol, or any change to a network, without also considering the implications on the security of the network. BGP, as the protocol that “runs the Internet backbone,” is a major focus of the efforts that have been made towards producing a secure routing protocol.
