Update Packing

BGP's packet format, as we discussed in Chapter 1, The Border Gateway Protocol, provides a set of attributes followed by the prefixes matching those attributes. Figure 5.5 illustrates.

Any group of prefixes sharing the same attributes can be packed into the same BGP update (as long as the BGP update doesn't exceed the maximum update size of 4096 octets). Assume a BGP process has the following set of information to send to a peer (using a single attribute, rather than all the attributes, to simplify the example somewhat):

  • 10.1.1.0/24, with a community of 100

  • 10.1.2.0/24, with a community of 100

  • 10.1.3.0/24, ...
