In many electronic systems, one of the most important functions within that system is its automatic gain control (AGC). The design of an AGC algorithm is 100% application dependent. Complete knowledge of the statistics of the input signal whose gain is to be monitored and controlled are the key to the successful design of an AGC circuit. There are several tried-and-true gain control algorithms, and typically a design engineer will choose one of these methods and modify its operational characteristics to fit his or her system specifications.
