CHAPTER 11Working with Site Collections

A common requirement when setting up new SharePoint environments is to create a lot of new site collections. For instance, you may have a new project collaboration area where each of the running projects within a company should get its own site to be able to collaborate more efficiently. In this chapter, we will look at how to automate the creation of site collections in SharePoint 2010.

In our first scenario, we will start with a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet containing a number of projects (or site names) that need to be created. You will see how simple it is to use this spreadsheet with Windows PowerShell to automatically create sites and set properties like, owner, title, and description.
