Chapter 1: History Unleashed

The opening quote is from “Little Gidding,” one of the Four Quartets published by T.S. Eliot in 1943. Niccolo Machiavelli relates his exchange with Pandolfo Petrucci in Legations, a collection of diplomatic dispatches that he wrote while serving as an envoy following France's invasion of the peninsula in 1494. Machiavelli wrote about Petrucci again in The Prince, calling him “a very able man.”

The “gobbledygook” paragraph was a popular meme back in September 2003, when it began to circulate on the Internet and through email circles.
