Abstract
This chapter describes ultrasonic surgical devices for medical therapy. The chapter begins with a discussion of device requirements and goals, including a brief historical review and a discussion of different tissue types. This is followed by a review of the general characteristics of ultrasonic surgical devices. The next section summarizes the various methods of action that have been identified, as well as intended and unwanted biological effects.
