Integrated circuit (IC) power delivery has, in the author’s experience, been a source of as much confusion as enlightenment. Fundamental questions often arise as to the amount of power desired, power conversion stages, and the voltage at which power is delivered. These questions also extend to the amount and type of capacitance necessary, inductance in all partitions of the power delivery network, the frequency responses of decoupling capacitance, device parasitic elements such as effective series resistance, loop inductance, and the placement of capacitors at the system, package, and chip levels.
