Red Hat-based distributions focus primarily on system stability and lack many third-party utilities and daemons. Luckily, this is not a concern for us, as groups exist to rectify this situation. One such group maintains EPEL, which we can exploit to simplify the process of installing Nagios.

Debian-based servers, for better or worse, are not so strict. Though they are often just as stable, the package repository is much more extensive. Thus, we can install Nagios with one invocation of apt-get. When installing the nagios3 package, all the necessary prerequisites are retrieved and installed as well.
