There are already some tools available on the web that already know how to do the dirty work to analyze the old text format EXPLAIN output. The best of the currently available ones is at http://explain.depesz.com/, where you can submit a plan and get a version highlighting potential problem areas. For example, if the estimated row counts don't match the actual ones, that jumps right out in the color-coded plan output.
