For the next few minutes, imagine yourself living in the late 19th century. Picture yourself boarding a train in final preparation for a long journey. After you have stowed your personal effects in the overhead bin and taken your seat, you peer out the window of your passenger car. You look toward the front of the train and notice a railway engineer as he climbs up the steel ladder on the side of the large locomotive that will pull the train to its destination.
