A regulator maintains a desired level of a designated characteristic or quality. For example, a thermostat controls the flow of heat energy into or out of a system. Actions taken by the thermostat are based on the feedback from a sensor. The system adapts its behavior, depending on sensor measurements and the desired level. An aircraft is another example that relies on regulatory processes. The autopilot takes the plane long distances even though the weather conditions fluctuate.
