Preface

Polymers represent a class of materials currently in use in a broad variety of applications. The first meaningful application occurred in 1935 when Wallace E. Carothers invented nylon, which quickly found application in stockings, fabrics, ropes, combs, tyres and many household items. Along with metals, semiconductors, and ceramics, polymers serve as one of the cornerstones of materials science and engineering.

A recent study by the National Research Council (UK) outlined some of the primary applications of polymers. Already, plastics such as styrofoam (polystyrene) are actively competing with paper in the packaging field.
