Repair of damaged aerospace composite structures

E. Archer,  and A. McIlhagger     University of Ulster, Newtownabbey, UK

Abstract

Airline companies like the benefits of composites; a major concern, however, is the ability to repair them when damaged. In response, airframe designers are striving to adopt designs which will be more robust in-service and substantiate repairs prior to entry into service. This chapter discusses the regulations and methods associated with current repair of composite aircraft, reviews the main causes of damage and discusses the current state of the art for repair. Theoretical models associated with the design of repair strategies are presented and the future needs of the aerospace are considered.
