The response of aerospace composites to temperature and humidity

F.R. Jones,  and J.P. Foreman     University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK

Abstract

This chapter discusses the critical environmental interactions with polymer composites which influence the micromechanics of fracture. The intention is to provide the reader with fundamentals of design for durability in service. Specifically, the diffusion of moisture into the matrix polymers is discussed with respect to the polarity of the cured resin. The effect of absorbed moisture on their thermomechanical properties is described. How the polymer Tg determines the hot or wet service temperature of a composite is described. A brief introduction into the modelling of these effects is given. Aerospace ...
