Impact, post-impact strength and post-impact fatigue behaviour of polymer composites

Abstract

The effect of impact on static strength and fatigue durability is reviewed. Impacts are categorised in terms of the impact velocity, impacting mass and impact energy. At low-to-medium velocities, delamination damage develops below the impact site with penetration likely at increased velocities. Under in-plane static compression buckling of impacted laminates reduces compression strength as measured by the compression after impact (CAI) test.
