Policy Disciplines

The notion of policy or different behavior can be applied to many different areas of an IP network. It can also be applied to many areas in other types of networks, or in non-networking-related fields. I refer to each area in which policy can be applied as a policy discipline.

The two areas that receive the majority of the focus within the network are QoS and security. These are described in more detail in the following sections and in Chapter 2.

Some other disciplines in which policies can be successfully allocated are address allocation of IP subnets, done by means of DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, described in Chapter 2), and the routes taken by IP packets in the network.
