7.2.2   Hailstorms

Distinct polarimetric radar signatures have been observed in hailstorms since at least the early 1970s (based largely on circular polarized radar), and from the early 1980s based on linear polarization radar. The Alberta Research Council’s S-band circularly polarized radar was designed and built for hail detection and was used for many years for hail research (e.g. Barge 1974; Al-Jumily et al. 1991). A detailed study of hailstorms was conducted under the auspices of the US National Hail Research Experiment (NHRE) in northeastern Colorado from 1972 to 1976 (Knight et al. 1982).
