The Director and the Stage Manager

On the day of rehearsal, if access to the venue is possible, the director arrives before the actors and meets with stage manager or line producer. Having discussed the distribution of responsibilities, they prepare the room. If there is no stage manager, the director assumes the day-of-rehearsal tasks. The playwright can assist.

The playing area should be cleared. Flats, masking drapes, abandoned scripts, and other extraneous items should be removed. Nothing should distract the audience’s focus from the actors. The playing area may need to be swept or mopped. The room temperature should be comfortable.
