In the closing decades of the twentieth century, another figure began to be encountered more frequently in the American theatre—the dramaturg, or literary manager. Long a fixture in European theatre, dramaturgs, or literary managers, began to find a place in America as institutional theatres took hold and became a permanent part of the way theatre is produced in the United States. Today, many of the large and medium-size resident theatres, and even some smaller ones, have a dramaturg as a part of the staff.
