It is the audience that really matters, not just what you have created on the stage. They are not just a bunch of lunks sitting out there waiting to be entertained but an active, alive group of imaginations ready to receive. It should now be clear to you that a director’s primary field of action is multiple communication, first to the actors and designers, and then, through the imagery they create and you help to select, to the audience. The actors and designers are your media, and only through them will your vision of a play take shape and be able to reach others. A play is not complete until an audience acts on what you and your collaborators have made.
