A diagnostic criticism is a written, and then oral, critical analysis of a scene directed by another director. Its main function is not to make you a book critic, but rather to intensify your skills in oral communication with actors and to improve your way of approaching self-criticism, by sharpening your critical faculties under controlled conditions. At first, you may feel uncomfortable about such give-and-take encounter sessions, but if you prepare your written critique well, the oral will go much easier. You will be learning how to listen to others, just as you expect actors and designers to listen to you.
