Most Windows XP device driver error messages will reflect an understanding of what a device driver is and how it operates. Knowing more about device drivers in general will provide a greater understanding of where the device driver has failed and help you solve problems. Consider the following example.

You install a new sound card in your computer. After booting the computer, you install the OEM drivers as described in the documentation. You reboot as required by the driver installation program, but after you log on to the computer, you do not hear any welcome greeting as you expected.
