MSN Messenger

While it's still below the radar of many computer users over thirty, younger users have made instant messaging (IM) software the 21st-century replacement for the party line. Pioneered by Netscape (now AOL) Instant Messenger and ICQ, IM software is also part of Microsoft's Internet strategy with its Windows Messenger IM client.

Windows Messenger 4.6 is installed by default with Windows XP, and can interconnect with the MSN Messenger IM client used by other Windows versions. Like MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger requires you to set up a .NET (Microsoft) Passport or have a Hotmail email address.
