Installing the SDK

Many excellent, graphical tools for developing Java applets are on the market. These tools are called Integrated Development Environments, or IDEs. For professional development, you'll probably want one of these tools. Regardless of which IDE you or your company choose, you should still be familiar with Sun's command-line SDK tools. Several reasons for this are

  • Periodically uploading and installing Sun's current SDK is the best way to keep up to speed with all the latest Java APIs.

  • The SDK is an excellent "reference platform" to make sure your code is portable to as wide an audience as possible.
