4.0. Role of Alarm System in Safety Instrumented Systems
From ISA technical reports, one gets an alarm is an audible and/or visible means of indication - to the operator about equipment malfunction, process deviation, or abnormal condition, requiring a response. As per Annex F of IEC 61511-3:2003, an alarm is an independent protection layer.
