1.1. The Companion Book

Planning Smarter is really a sequel to my previous book, which was tragically misnamed: Visual Basic 6: Error Coding and Layering. My working title for that book was Coding Smarter, but that name didn't survive. This time around, the name Planning Smarter was approved (thanks to Prentice Hall). My earlier book began with a simple mission statement:

To help you improve the quality and productivity of your software development effort.

That book did not attempt to be a comprehensive “Bible” of software development practice. It merely attempted to expose some of the most critical problems in software development and to provide simple methods to eliminate them. It identified a lack of code standardization, reuse, error-coding, ...
