Glen Tullman, chief executive officer (CEO) of Allscripts Healthcare Solutions from 1997 to 2012, transformed a failing drug repackaging company into a $1.4 billion leader in electronic health records (EHR), laying the foundation for a fundamental change in the cost and quality of our health and health care system. By building the industry’s most widely used system, including more than 180,000 physicians, 1,500 hospitals, and 10,000 ­post-acute-care centers using Allscripts software, the company established the infrastructure for patient-centered care. Allscripts software allows patients to walk into any doctor’s office, hospital, or nursing home in the network and have their medical records, with permission, instantly available for medical staff to coordinate diagnostics, treatment, and therapeutics. Putting the patient at the center of information technology took tenacious visionaries, such as Glen, first to create and then to advance the fledgling EHR industry as a tool for improving medical care.
