Chapter 3. How to Use the Bow

TO PRODUCE A BEAUTIFUL TONE on your cello, you’ll need to learn to use the bow. Bowing is one of the more elusive skills required of string players. It may look easy when you see a wonderful cellist such as Yo-Yo Ma do it, but that’s because he’s really, really good! The movements that you’ll need to learn in order to use the bow are quite subtle. You won’t master bowing in a few hours, nor in a few days.

Fortunately, you don’t need to learn everything at once. If you take it one step at a time, practice with care, correct bad habits before they become ingrained, and listen closely to the sounds coming from the cello, you should be able to master the basic techniques of bowing within a month or two.
