YOU PROBABLY ALREADY know what subtitles are. They were first used in silent films before the time of talkies. They’re used today in foreign language films so that the viewer can understand what’s going on in a film where the language is well. . .foreign. Subtitles are also used to describe other sounds that indicate action, such as clapping, crowd cheering, thunder, and so on. These are not to be confused with dubbed movies where the audio is someone speaking in a language you understand while the onscreen lips move to another language. (Think old Godzilla movies. . . .)
