13. The Nose X-Factor

Visual aids that are easy to remember are a lifesaver when photographing under pressure. I have created simple and easy-to-remember visual aids to help me when I’m working, particularly on a photo shoot. This chapter deals with one of these visual aids. When photographing couples, I find that whenever their noses point directly at each other or run parallel to each other, the moment will appear phony.

To ensure that I keep my eye on this issue, I imagine a straight line projecting from the noses of my subjects. If their noses are pointed toward each other or are parallel to each other, I tilt the head of at least one person to make sure that those two lines intercept, creating an “X”; hence, the name of this chapter.
