Like everything else in photography, posing is quite subjective. People pose their clients or family members based on ideas they have or photographs they have seen. But for most people, understanding why some poses work and others don’t is a different thing altogether.

We instinctively want our subjects to look relaxed, and when something about a pose triggers a warning flag, our brains will reject it. This happens more often than you think.
