To develop a strategic plan and set the future direction of a company or develop human resource programs to support its growth, leaders need to know what is going on within the organization, in the industry, and in the marketplace, and they need to know how technological developments will affect operations. An environmental scan provides the framework for collecting information about factors relevant to the decision-making process and can help management make decisions that take advantage of existing opportunities and avoid pitfalls.
