Interrelationships Among HR Activities and Programs Across Functional Areas

The six functional areas of HR may be clearly delineated for purposes of the PHR exam. In reality, however, these aren't very clear, and they aren't very delineated, either. The lines between them are blurred, as evidenced by these 19 core areas of knowledge. They overlap, entwine, and weave themselves into unique workplace tapestries, as do the six HR functional areas. This is part of what makes HR such an interesting and challenging profession, and part of what mandates our commitment to continuous professional development. For just when we think we have “seen it all,” we are presented with a new—and until that point unpredictable—set of circumstances.
