Needs Assessment and Analysis

“Needs assessment and analysis” is the first step in “ADDIE,” a process model often used in the areas of instructional design. “ADDIE” is actually an acronym that stands for

  • A: Needs Assessment/Analysis (cited differently in different sources)

  • D: Design

  • D: Development

  • I: Implementation

  • E: Evaluation

We're going to take a much closer look at ADDIE in Chapter 5, “HR Development,” but for now, let's just address the idea of needs assessment and analysis. Needs assessment and analysis is a way of defining problems. Taking this a step further, a “problem” could be defined as the difference between a situation or condition as it currently is compared to what that situation or condition should be.
