Chapter 4. Search Engine

The amount of information available online today is absolutely mind-boggling. It's no wonder why so many of us have become dependent on search engines such as Google and Yahoo! to help us find what we're looking for. We just type in some terms and click a button and seemingly, as if by magic, the desired results appear. It's doubtful, however, that many of us have stopped to think about what happens behind the scenes when we click that search button.

In this chapter, I will guide you through building a basic search engine, which you can implement on your own web site. The result of this project won't make you the next Yahoo! or Google, but it serves two goals: to help visitors quickly find the information they're looking for on your site and to give you some important insight into how search engines work in the process.
