E.1 About Web Servers

Before you set up PHP and MySQL, make sure you have a Web server available on your computer. Most modern operating systems ship with a built-in Web server. Windows comes with either Internet Information Services (IIS) or Personal Web Server, depending on the version. Mac OS X and other UNIX platforms ship with the Apache Web server.

To test that your computer is set up with a Web server and that it is running, point your browser to http://localhost/. You should get a welcome page or a list of files. If you get an error message that the server cannot be found, your computer either does not have a Web server or it is not running.
