PEAR
PEAR, the PHP Extension and Application Repository, grew out of a desire to mimic Perl's counterpart, Comprehensive Perl Archive Network, or CPAN. The purpose of PEAR (and CPAN and Tex's CTAN) is to establish a methodology for programmers to develop and share code as part of the architecture of PHP itself. Because so many programmers will frequently perform the same tasks in their applications, standardizing certain processes makes a lot of sense. PEAR is essentially an officially sanctioned set of classes that have been incorporated into PHP (as of PHP 4). Accordingly, PEAR also sets rules regulating how a class is to be structured and documented so that there is some quality control as to what code is added to the mix.
