Photoshop offers several ways to create elements, such as geometric and freeform shapes, out of pixels and also by using vectors. Filling and stroking these elements are two of the most venerable commands at your disposal. Therefore, if you need to have your objects colored on the inside or outside or both, the Fill and Stroke facilities of Photoshop are worthy of your consideration. This chapter focuses on filling and stroking selection outlines, not vector paths and shapes. For the latter, be sure and check out Book IV, Chapter 1.

Here’s how filling and stroking works:

check.png The Fill command adds color, a pattern, or content to the interior of a selection of any shape (or form) you’ve created.

check.png The Stroke command applies color around the selection edge only.
