A.2. Popular File Formats
Most Photoshop users know about formats like JPEG, used as the standard image format in many cameras and also as the standard picture format for the Web, but there are other commonly used Photoshop formats that are not as obvious in their purpose.
Table A.4 lists several commonly used Photoshop file formats, their file extension, and any specialized uses that may be applicable. For most purposes, the native PSD Photoshop file format can be the most versatile and reliable, but it is a good idea to have a basic understanding of the other formats. For example, you may have a client who has requested a particular format. Knowing which formats serve which purposes can help you to provide your client with valuable advice that may save you both some time and trouble.

EPS | .eps | Encapsulated Post-Script file. Widely used vector illustration format. It's primarily used to swap design elements between Photoshop and illustration and page layout programs, such as Illustrator and InDesign. |
