13.5. Paragraph Type

For laying out paragraphs of text in, say, a brochure or flyer design, use paragraph text. In this mode, you create a frame that covers the size of the area that you would like to fill with type, and the text you enter is constrained to that area or shape, as shown in Figure 13.6. You can always resize the boundaries of this frame after you've created it. To create a block of paragraph text, do either of the following:

• Click and drag with the Type tool to define a rectangle that forms the boundary of your text.

• Hold down Alt/Option and click with the Type tool, and then enter the dimensions of the text box you want to create in the Paragraph Text Size dialog box.

Begin entering type. Specify type options with the Type tool Options Bar, the Character panel, or the Paragraph panel, which is covered in more detail later in this chapter.

Pressing Enter/Return in paragraph type mode creates a new paragraph. As in the case of point type, you can also transform the bounding box of the text by using the transform handles. Drag the handles to adjust the width and height of the text box. Shift+drag to constrain the proportions of your text box.

Commit to type changes by pressing Enter, clicking the check mark in the Toolbar, or selecting another tool in the Toolbar or a different layer in the Layers panel.

Text that overflows the boundaries of the text box is indicated by a small plus sign in a square at the lower right of the boundary.
