Chapter 10. Solving Typical Repair Problems

After a damaged photo has been scanned, it's time to gel to work with Photoshop, repairing the wear and tear caused by poor handling and the passage of time. In this chapter, we're going to survey some different kinds of damage, the problems they present, and typical solutions for those problems. If you understand the handful of techniques I'm about to show you, you'll be prepared to handle a huge array of restoration issues and problems. In Chapter 12, you get a chance to put many of these techniques into action when you work on a hands-on retouching project.

Before we begin, I want to share a personal experience with you. This section of this book is special to me. Several years ago, while visiting my mother, I look the opportunity to go through the family "photo album." At the time, Mom had just moved from San Antonio to Seattle, so the photo album was contained in two large grocery bags and consisted of piles and piles of photos. I dug through those bags for a couple of hours and pulled out the twelve best shots of myself and each of my five siblings, I also set aside all the photos of my parents and any ancestors I could find.
