Foreword

This book addresses the new discipline of “photonic engineering,” which refers to the engineering of photonic devices, subsystems, and systems—even system-on-a-chip. Photonic engineering has already played a major role in developing optical network “nodes” within the globally deployed long-haul and short-reach fiber-optic communications networks that benefit our everyday lives. This engineering is likely to be the backbone of applications in microwave photonics, sensing, and imaging that are coming on-stream now.
